The Adult Literacy and Livelihood Program (ALLP) by SOUL is a crucial initiative designed to uplift the Savar tribe and other economically disadvantaged communities in the Sundarbans. This program aims to break the cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and dangerous livelihood practices by providing basic literacy education and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The Savar tribe is one of the most marginalized and vulnerable communities in the Sundarbans. For generations, their livelihoods have depended on honey and crab collection in the dense forests, which exposes them to significant dangers such as frequent tiger attacks, crocodile encounters, and snake bites. With a literacy rate of 0%, many Savar families remain trapped in poverty, relying on hazardous work for survival.
Additionally, 90% of Savar children suffer from malnutrition due to limited income and lack of access to essential resources. The absence of education and formal employment opportunities perpetuates this cycle of poverty and danger.
The Adult Literacy and Livelihood Program (ALLP) tackles these challenges by:

The ALLP aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), including
The program provides inclusive and equitable education for first-generation learners from marginalized communities.
By training participants and creating self-employment opportunities, the program promotes sustained, inclusive economic growth and decent work.
The program helps reduce poverty by transitioning participants away from dangerous, low-paying work to safer, sustainable livelihoods.
