Empowering the Savar Tribe and Economically Disadvantaged Communities of the Sundarbans

The Adult Literacy and Livelihood Program (ALLP) by SOUL is a crucial initiative designed to uplift the Savar tribe and other economically disadvantaged communities in the Sundarbans. This program aims to break the cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and dangerous livelihood practices by providing basic literacy education and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

About the Savar Community

The Savar tribe is one of the most marginalized and vulnerable communities in the Sundarbans. For generations, their livelihoods have depended on honey and crab collection in the dense forests, which exposes them to significant dangers such as frequent tiger attacks, crocodile encounters, and snake bites. With a literacy rate of 0%, many Savar families remain trapped in poverty, relying on hazardous work for survival.

Additionally, 90% of Savar children suffer from malnutrition due to limited income and lack of access to essential resources. The absence of education and formal employment opportunities perpetuates this cycle of poverty and danger.

Program Overview:

The Adult Literacy and Livelihood Program (ALLP) tackles these challenges by:

  • Providing basic literacy education in reading, writing, and arithmetic to members of the Savar tribe and other disadvantaged communities.
  • Offering self-employment opportunities through practical, skill-based training in areas such as tailoring, grocery shops, cycle repair, vegetable vending, and more.

By equipping participants with these essential skills, the program empowers them to pursue safer livelihoods, enabling them to improve their quality of life and break free from dangerous, low-income work.

The Urgency of Change:

The Savar tribe faces grave risks daily— 5-6 tiger attacks per year claim lives and threaten their safety. Children, from a young age, are exposed to hazardous work, while families lack the resources to provide proper nutrition and education.

The ALLP program will:

  • Increase literacy rates, equipping the Savar tribe with the skills needed for safer, more sustainable work.
  • Create self-employment opportunities, providing alternatives to dangerous forest work.
  • Improve community health by enabling safer livelihoods that support better nutrition and living conditions.

Global Alignment with UNSDG

The ALLP aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), including

Quality Education

The program provides inclusive and equitable education for first-generation learners from marginalized communities.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

By training participants and creating self-employment opportunities, the program promotes sustained, inclusive economic growth and decent work.

No Poverty

The program helps reduce poverty by transitioning participants away from dangerous, low-paying work to safer, sustainable livelihoods.

Program Goals

  • Increase Literacy: Provide basic literacy education to 100+ participants from the Savar tribe and nearby communities.
  • Create Safer Livelihoods: Equip participants with practical skills to start small businesses, steering them away from hazardous forest work.
  • Empower Women and Families: Engage women and youth, promoting gender equality and economic empowerment within the community.
