Fighting Hunger and Malnutrition in the Sundarbans

Launched in 2016, the End Hunger Program by SOUL is committed to addressing hunger and malnutrition in the Sundarbans, focusing on the Savar community and other economically weaker sections. By providing nutritious cooked meals, the program has served 1.2 million meals to date, improving the health and well-being of the most vulnerable populations.

Program Components

The Hunger Challenge in the Sundarbans

Hunger is a persistent issue in the Sundarbans, particularly for isolated communities like the Savar tribe, who face extreme poverty. Malnutrition, especially among children, is widespread, and the situation worsens during natural disasters like cyclones and floods, which frequently hit the region.

  • Economic hardship and seasonal unemployment limit access to nutritious food for many families, leaving them food-insecure.
  • Natural disasters further cut off access to food, leaving communities vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition.

How We Are Helping

The End Hunger Program provides cooked, nutritious meals to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the food they need to survive and thrive:

  • We serve hygienic meals, including rice, lentils, and vegetables, to offer a balanced diet that addresses nutrient deficiencies.
  • The program focuses on Sundarbans residents, especially children, the elderly, and low-income families who are at the greatest risk of malnutrition.
  • During crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or natural disasters, we expand meal distribution to reach more families in need, ensuring that no one is left hungry.

Key Focus Areas

Supporting the Savar Community

The Savar tribe is among the most marginalized communities in the Sundarbans, struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity. The End Hunger Program targets this community, ensuring that daily meals are provided to help prevent malnutrition.

Feeding Economically Disadvantaged Groups

Beyond the Savar tribe, the program also serves other economically disadvantaged families in the region. Many face seasonal unemployment or are affected by natural disasters, making it difficult to afford food. The End Hunger Program ensures they receive regular, nutritious meals.

Emergency Meal Distribution

During emergencies like cyclones, floods, and the pandemic, SOUL acts quickly to provide meals to displaced and affected families. Our emergency response ensures that no one is left without food during times of crisis.

Program Impact

Since 2016, the End Hunger Program has made a significant impact on the fight against hunger and malnutrition:

  • 1.2 million cooked meals have been served to date, providing much-needed nutrition to those in need.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, we expanded our reach to urban areas, serving meals to the urban poor and homeless populations in Kolkata.
  • Our hygienically prepared meals have helped improve the health of many who were previously malnourished, especially children and the elderly.

What Success Looks Like

  • Malnutrition reduction: The program has contributed to reducing malnutrition rates among vulnerable groups, particularly in children.
  • Increased food security: By providing consistent meals, we have improved food security for families who otherwise struggle to get food.
  • Community engagement: We encourage donors to support our cause, and regularly share photos and social media updates to show the impact of their contributions.

Global Alignment with UNSDG

The End Hunger Program aligns with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG):

Zero Hunger

We work to end hunger and ensure access to nutritious food for vulnerable groups.

Good Health and Well-Being

By reducing malnutrition, we promote better health and well-being for all ages.

No Poverty

Providing free meals helps alleviate the financial burden on families living in poverty.

Future Goals

  • Expand meal distribution to more remote areas of the Sundarbans, reaching even more vulnerable families.
  • Partner with local authorities and NGOs to create sustainable feeding programs that address long-term food insecurity.
  • Increase nutrition education to teach families how to maximize available food resources for better health.
